✴︎SAPIENTIA #1✴︎
✴︎The One Thing Necessary,
an essay on Johan Amos Comenius
by Frater Acher✴︎
We all have our personal heroes. Among magicians, most of them tend to be dead — surviving only through the books, stories, ruptures, and occasional scandals they left behind.
One such hero of mine, since I was a young man, has been Johan Amos Comenius (1592–1670). I am therefore deeply grateful to share that, in collaboration with Ouroboros Press, we are releasing a strictly limited edition of a new essay I wrote to rekindle the magical memory of this fiercely independent, unruly, and profoundly caring human mind.
The pamphlet-style essay is available as a free digital edition through the Ouroboros Press website. Ouroboros has also released a limited printed edition for the US market. For the international market, I have had 100 copies produced by the same small bindery that created the fine editions of Goêtic Atavisms and MUTABOR, and who are currently at work on The Rooted Flame.
Hand-numbered and signed copies are now on their way to my three trusted homes of occulture in the UK: Watkins Books, Midian Books, and Courtyard Books. By next week, the limited edition pamphlets should be available through their websites and shops.
So why might you care about this little publication?
There is no better time than now to remember the challenges into which we have been thrown — and to call to mind those elders who learned to meet them before us. Few ancestors embody a lifelong resistance to despair, numbness, cynicism, and fear in the face of terror, war, exile, and loss more clearly than Johan Amos Comenius: Moravian bishop, pansophic visionary, and spiritual heir to both Paracelsus and the Rosicrucian manifestos.
Comenius was not merely an example for his own age. Modern Western magic and culture would look different without him. His influence shaped education, politics, early modern science, applied magic, and the great Rosicrucian project of world reform.
Ouroboros Press’ inaugural edition of their new journal SAPIENTIAnow offers a standalone volume dedicated to my essay, The One Thing Necessary. In a media landscape that monetizes outrage and rewards fragmentation, polemic, and exhaustion, Comenius’ insistence that wonder begins in direct sensory encounter with the world — inside the magical circle and beyond it — reads less like seventeenth-century mysticism than like a practical instruction in how to remain human.
I hope this small text may serve as a calm hand on your shoulder, an old presence at your back, or a lantern at your side.
LVX,
Frater Acher
